Relaxing on the Beach


We have brekkie with Katya and Jim, then a walk by the lake as we wonder why it's named after Thomas Edison, this Edison company seems to be all over and wonder if they're related in this age of corporate mergers, the Bob Dylan song "Talking World War III Blues" with the line "but I didn't pay the Con Ed bill so the radio didn't work so well", Con Ed being the electric monopoly in New York City, Consolidated Edison, could they be related?

Back for lunch and the menu is already getting a bit tired, gotta have the same salad I had yesterday, but at least they have some cold beer, which of course forces a nap in the afternoon.

Apres nap and it's time to repack, they're resorting the resupply container (it's literally a small container like goes on a ship) and they can't find our resupply box, a moment of consternation until someone realizes that it's back in the store behind the counter, happy days. It's really only 2 days to Muir Trail Ranch but we have an extra day so we can take a zero there as well, so packs won't be too heavy.

Dinner is a ginormous pasta dish with grilled chicken on top, we've drunk them outa all the good wine, there's just some cheap crappy sweet wine left, not my favorite and it's a holiday weekend, no resupply until the next day.

Back to the room and there's a disaster in the room next door, the hot water pipe in the ceiling has burst and there's water flooding all over, luckily it doesn't get into our room, we're wondering what the hot water situation will be in the morning though, we just got the room to be able to take a hot shower without paying extra, and of course a warm comfy bed. The hot shower part may be nixed.

Selfie in Tuolumne Meadows Igor dropped us off at the Rangers Station after a beautiful drive up Tioga Pass from June Lake. A long line of people stood between us and a permit, as it turned out most were waiting for a walk permit, that line opened at 11. We still waited for a while to get to the permit counter, everyone in line seemed in very good spirits and there was a definite air of excitement about it. After a friendly quizz by the ranger (no failing grade) we had our piece of bureaucratic paper. Alcohol and toothpaste in the bear canister seemed a little over the top and we knew already that it wouldn't fit. Our next problem was to find the trail, it was reported to be close to the Rangers Station but there were trails and hikers going everywhere and we were a bit disorientated so had to ask directions, a bit embarrassing. Finished at Whitney Portal

Pretty Wildflowers Trailside  It's a quick packup and outa Dodge, we aim to get to the Whitney Portal for late lunch if possible, only 6.2 miles but 3300' downhill, nice little warmup hike for those going up to the peak. As always we're following a very pretty stream down and there are wild flowers trailside, a nice way to finish. I waited till we got outa the no poop zone before heading off into the woods, that opportunity comes at Mirror Lake, a small and pretty body just off the trail, looks like a popular spot to take a dip and Elena avails, I'm washed up a bit and feeling much better now, a group of hikers stops by and the guys plunge in the water, one naked and without a care. Tough Day Over Forester Pass, Highest Pass on JMT

Stream Gurgling Down Off Forester Pass Gonna be a tough day, another long climb making 2 days in a row, even though only 8.6 miles, so we're up and out relatively early. It's 6.8 miles up to the pass and it starts off relatively easy and get's steeper as we go up. We can see that the trail is getting ready to pop outa the trees and get steeper so stop for 15 minutes to calorie up with a car for 15 minutes before attempting. It's steeper and winds around and I'm already feeling tired, we pass a couple stopped to rest trailside, we'll see them again a few times. The trail twists and turns around small peaks on the way up, then we're suddenly at the bottom of a large snow bank, we can see tracks leading up in the snow and also some off to the side, the treadway on the bank looks kinda tricky to me so off to the side and stay on a bit of slope, one foot on the dirt and one on the snow bank, makes it a little easier.
